          Many community members have long questioned why Brookline has a ban, when neighboring communities like Newton and Boston allow some amount of overnight on-street parking.

          The town’s policy has historic roots, according to Transportation Administrator Todd Kirrane.

          “The overnight ban within the Town of Brookline actually dates back to the late 1800s, that we have documented, when it was illegal to tether your horse to a pole on the public way overnight,” he said.
